How to Promote a Mixtape (Step by Step Guide)

One of the most common questions we get asked here by artists is how to promote their mixtape. There are a few posts that touch on this subject we have previously published, but we will take the time here to break it down all over again. There are many elements to a successful campaign for any form of music, whether it is a mixtape, video, or single, which must be addressed. The artist who does the best in all areas of marketing and promotions is likely to fare best in the new music industry where hundreds of mixtapes are released daily. The question to ask yourself is: How will can my mixtape stand apart from the other 200 mixtapes released today?

The answer to that question for artists is usually “The music will set me apart”, however I am here to tell you that is the wrong answer. The music is obviously important to convert new fans, however when planning a promotion you need to take into account all the steps that a fan must get through to actually start listening to the music. Before a new fan can discover an artist they must first be presented with an proposition to reach the mixtape, meaning you have to put the project in front of them, whether email marketing, website advertising, social media, etc. the first step is for them to see your offering, typically in the form of an advertisement. Once the fan sees the ad, they will first decide whether the text or image of the promotion is worth clicking, this factor takes into account the buzz an artist has and the actual visual that accompanies the mixtape project. Then once the fan clicks the ad they will again have to be impressed by the landing page presentation before they will actually engage with the music. Once we have them here then we hope the music can speak for itself, that is up to the artist!

So to break down the first few steps further here are all the key elements of a successful mixtape promotion

  1. Create the Music (Creating the best possible product is the first step, and this blog is not about telling you how to create, so that is up to you as an artist!)
  2. Create the Visuals
    1. Mixtape Cover – The mixtape cover is THE MOST IMPORTANT aspect of the promotion. The mixtape cover will make up most of the other ads, email blasts, and of course on sites like Datpiff.com it is the only graphic present with the artists’ name and the only visual to rely on.
    2. Site Skin – This is a feature of key mixtape sites like Datpiff.com and Coast2CoastMixtapes.com, where most in depth promotions include a skin of the entire site. If you want to create a successful campaign this is a key ad unit to include in your plan.
    3. Advertisements – The most common sizes of ads are 728×90, 300×250 and 160×600 so create these sizes and implement with whatever marketing and promotion company you are working with, or do it yourself by creating an ad campaign in Google Adwords to display your ads on relevant sites across the internet.
  3. Plan The Promotion
    1. Create Project Outline – At this step once you have you have the creative items completed it is time to develop the promotion. The first step is to pick a release date and work backwards from there to create a timeline for each step of the promotion. Typically you would want to pick a date at least 2 weeks into the future so you have time to partner with key promotion companies and have time to schedule your promotion with them. Email blasts typically have a schedule a few weeks out, so don’t expect them to send the minute you contact them.
    2. Find Strategic Partners – Most successful promotions will have a team behind them, so seek out a publicist, marketing company or a specific mixtape promotion company such as Coast 2 Coast Mixtapes Promotion to get all of the promotion items set up for you. If not pay attention to the next steps to be sure you are getting the most from your promotion!
  4. Execute PR Campaign
    1. Email Blasts
    2. Website Advertising
    3. Social Media Promotions
      1. Facebook – Facebook ads are a great way to get some more engagement with your project, they even help you create an ad once you upload a post about your project. This self service solution can be used by anyone, so once the project is out be sure to check out the Facebook Ads!
      2. Twitter Ads – Again their self serve solution can do wonders for your project. Get out there and experiment!
      3. Instagram – With a possible 1 to 1 share ratio Instagram shows the most promising return, however you cannot link to your project in with your picture post. So best would be to create engaging pictures and then link to the project in your bio of your instagram so users can go there to quickly access the project. Use sites such as TrackClipper.com to make short videos for each song of your mixtape to share with fans.
      4. Automation – It is always best to schedule regular promotions for your project, using tools such as Hootsuite makes this easy to execute promotions across multiple platforms and accounts. Create an educated campaign to send tweets at the best times of day to get the best results!
      5. All Other Social Networks – Get on as many as possible!
  5. Analyze Results
    1. Be sure you have systems in place to track results and links. Use tracking links such as bit.ly so you can see the amount of clicks each type of social media is sending you. Also compare results across all mixtape platforms for plays, shares, comments, downloads, etc.
    2. Use the data to make a better plan for next time!!

Even using all of these methods can garner less than spectacular results, the important thing is to keep grinding it out and releasing music using an educated plan until the plan, music and fans come together to make the perfect storm and get your mixtape out virally to millions of fans!

PS I will be adding more to this article as we go, there are many more pieces that need to be explained further!

Video | @DJPain1 – Promoting Your Music Online Series

Our good friend and Coast 2 Coast DJ, DJ Pain 1, has taken some time in recent weeks to post a great series for upcoming artists on how to promote music online. The series turned into 3 parts from social networking to getting beats to artists for producers.  Pain 1 is a certified Gold producer himself with placements with Jeezy and more, as well as an FM radio DJ, so he has a great perspective to dish out some advice. Enjoy!

Build a Website – Establish an Online Presence

wpx_officialIn today’s music industry it is absolutely neccessary to establish an online marketing plan centered around a website, preferrably a domain that you own so YOU reap all the benefits of your hard work.  The first step to setting up your website is thinking of a domain that encompasses your brand and some keywords about the brand as well in order to take advantage of search engine marketing.  We recommend using GoDaddy to register the domain as they are the quickest and easiest to deal with in most cases as the market leader.  The next step would be to call the experts over at WordPress Express who were kind enough to build this blog as well as a host of other music sites around artists, venues, models, concerts, and brands.  They will set up all the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Social Network Optimization necessary for you to excel as a new or established brand.  Thanks to their setup this blog gets hundreds of visits everyday from users like you looking for information to put them ahead in the music industry, and they can do the same for you and your focus.

Hootsuite – Advanced Social Network Management

hootsuite-logo

Hootsuite is a great platform that allows a business, brand, or celebrity to easily manage and track multiple social networks, most notably Twitter.  The software also manages: Facebook, Facebook Pages, LinkedIN, WordPress, Myspace, Foursquare, and Ping.fm.  We use their platform to schedule Tweets across multiple platforms with uniform links and branding messages.  This allows us to easily schedule out our promotional tweet announments for the whole week in just a few minutes.  The service also offers fairly robust tracking, however you must use their URL shortener, ow.ly, for the statistics to work.

Overall the site is a great addition for any online marketer or someone who wants an easy way to manage a few accounts.  I definitely recommend using this tool as I use it everyday in conjunction with many other programs and tools I have mentioned previously in the blog.  Most notably the TweetAdder software and the Hummingbird 2 Automation system.

Involver – Complete Brand Marketing for Facebook

Involver LogoI’m sure everyone is aware that Facebook is now the largest social network to ever hit the internet, it is currently ranked the #2 site in the world for traffic, second only to Google. This feat is pretty amazing and leads one to contemplate how exactly can a business, brand, or individual take full advantage of the networking that Facebook offers.  As to date there is no real way to automate your Facebook as they have successfully stopped most spam, but Involver offers a unique solution for those serious about Facebook branding.

The Involver platform is only available for Facebook Pages, which are different than personal profiles, and are the type of page every business, brand or individual needs to set up to actually use Facebook for promotion. This is because personal profiles have a 5,000 friend limit that is not negotiable, so if you want to market to more than 5,000 people you need to set up a Facebook Fan Page sooner than later…

The idea behind Involver is simple, basically it allows the user to do whatever they want with extra tabs on the Facebook page. This includes but is not limited to; custom graphics, rss feeds, youtube/twitter integration, file sharing, music/video integration and much, much more. Visit the Involver website to see all the available apps.

Involver Example

The platform is intended for upper level business enterprises as the Pro version runs $99/month. The company currently provides the Facebook platform for media giants such as US Weekly (Pictured Above), Warner Bros., Puma, TIME, US, PBS and of course most major record labels.  But they also offer a very limited Free Trial version with 2 of the apps that are available. Either way be sure to check this out once you get a decent Facebook Fan Page following to maximize your social content!

Sidenote: Involver DOES allow automation at a limited level for PRO and Enterprise plans so be sure to check that out as well!!

Twittercounter.com – Twitter Statistics

TwitterCounter.com Logo

Everyone that uses Twitter to promote needs to stop by the site and sign up, it literally takes a few clicks and you will be viewing some stats great stats about your account! TwitterCounter tracks your followers, friends, tweets and is able to make predictions of your future stats as well. You can also get the nice widget that you see below to increase your followers as well!

Social Project Funding – SellaBand.com

Public Enemy on SellaBand.com

The idea behind SellaBand.com is great, get your fans to fund and profit share in your upcoming recording projects! The social aspect of the site makes it fun, easy, and relativily simple for regular music fans to become actual record moguls! The site is endored by Public Enemy who are currently raising $250,000 from their fans for their next major record label release. In exchange for the funds, they are offering their “Believers” (investor fans) a 33% share in the project collectively.  So for a small $25 investment, you can own a part of the next Public Enemy project and actually make money off the release!

I looked into the site a little and it looks very sound, the site acts as an escrow service, meaning the site holds all funds from the users until the goal is reached. Then they take a 10% cut, which is modest, and then slowly release the funds to the artist for the project. In this way they can control how the money is spent as they only pay legitimate invoices that directly promote the project at hand.

In all I give the site an A+ for the idea, now the only thing is for them to gather more user/fans/investors so that projects can reach goals on a regular basis. At this point it appears they only have about 5,000 active users that invest in the projects…but using viral marketing and neat widgets they should be able to quickly rise to a top tool for artists and investors alike.  Now click the link above and join up! And don’t forget to invest in the next Coast 2 Coast Feature Album!!

Manage Your Social Networks

I came across a very interesting site today that could help all artists using Web 2.0 technology. The ArtistData.com idea is to update all of your artist specific social networking sites from a single hub. So when you have a event you can upload that event to all your profiles with a single click. The idea is great but at the moment they are only in Beta stage and have about 20 social networks that they can connect to. Watch for them in the near future and definitely get an account now so you can be ahead of the game when they add even more networks and features!!

Ning – Social Network Aggregator

Ning LogoEverybody knows about the numerous NING social networks that exist throughout the urban blogosphere, but are you taking advantage of them?? Every artist should go to www.ning.com if you have not already and join every network you can to promote your music on, there are HUNDREDS OF THEM!! The best part is ning.com keeps your info and acts as a central location for all your nings, basically you can search for networks to join and keep them all in order on your www.ning.com profile, you can even change all your pictures on all networks at once!! Then you can go through in order and add your song/photo/blog to every network in order.

If you don’t have a NING account yet set up your first on our Coast 2 Coast Mixtape Community to start promoting yourself, sign up at www.coast2coastcommunity.com

Good NING Hunting!!
